When I graduated from university in 1985 I decided to go into commercial banking so that I could get a feel for the finance industry and additionally have a look at other types of businesses in the BC market place. I worked as a commercial account manager for CIBC for 7 years and during that time managed a portfolio of loans of over $55 million.
I was involved in a number of real estate financing deals there and I decided that a related career would be a good idea, but I decided that I had done my time working for a major bank. Having only one option to offer my clients didn't seem to be the best alternative, so that is when I looked into the idea of being a mortgage broker. That way I could offer my clients a choice, and help them decide on the best option rather than having to rely on the credit decision or limited products offered by just one lender.
When I joined the industry, most consumers did not know what a mortgage broker was. We originated only about 5% of Canada's mortgage volume and relied heavily on realtors to help us find clients. Today, mortgage brokers originate over 25% of Canada's mortgage volume, and I find that most clients know the value of having a mortgage broker, and will seek a relationship with a good broker before even looking at houses or talking to realtors. About 90% of my business comes from referrals from my client base, which is of course the greatest compliment I could ask for.
In the 15 years that I have been a mortgage broker, I have served well over 1,500 clients, with many of them now my repeat and loyal customers. In 1998 I opened my own business, Mfuture.com/Mortgage Executives and grew that business to over $85 Million in mortgage volume annually, with 5 licensed mortgage brokers helping me grow the business by providing excellent service to our clients and referral sources.
In 2007 I was excited to be offered the opportunity for limited partnership in Mortgage Architects. I am looking forward to being part of a team of top-notch professionals that creates Canada's number one mortgage broker. I feel strongly that the association with Mortgage Architects will be of benefit to all of our clients through second-to-none-mortgage product offerings, best rates, and more options than ever before.
